The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) is an independent humanitarian institution mandated to protect and assist people affected by armed conflict and other violence. It is a Swiss association with international legal personality and a status equivalent to an international organization in carrying out its functions.
Evidence and transparency: The Geneva Conventions and Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement statutes recognize its role. Resources explain humanitarian law, detention work, protection and field assistance worldwide. Its public statutes and annual reporting describe governance and voluntary funding from governments, National Societies and other public and private donors.
Review scope: Last reviewed 2026-10-29: public-source desk review of official identity, geography, subject scope, available methods, access and institutional disclosures. Field operations, every finding and restricted services were not independently audited. Inclusion identifies a source to assess; it does not imply H/S endorses every position, appeal or finding.
